After the No 03 XXS Custom silk brocade interior i showed last week, i wanted to show something a little more utilitarian.  By now i have done a good few custom interiors.  You may remember that Palmer and Sons suitcases and bags are typically left unlined.  I just love the feel, smell, and look of unlined bags, they are so workman like.

A few weeks ago i finished a suitcase No 03 L that has a custom interior.  Yes that’s a No 03 L, it’s not even on the website for sale but it measures 20x12x6, which is a pretty massive suitcase to carry on a day to day basis.  I would say more something to pop in the boot of your car on a weekend retreat. 

The idea was that it would hold cameras and a laptop, plus i guess some clothing etc.  So the customer wanted several stretchable straps running across the base of the suitcase and a laptop sleeve in the top.  I think there are around 150 hand hammered rivets in the single bag...a lot of work all with a wooden mallet!

The interior was great fun to do after i finished the overall bag.  Sometimes the interior is fitted after the bag is made and sometimes whilst making.  It all depends on whether the bag will need to be wet to soften the leather whilst working with it.  If it does then the interior can’t be fitted until later.

I think the suitcase turned out great, and i really love this green wool/mix material which is hard wearing and warm to touch.  I particularly liked the handle on this one.  Typically the Cocobolo i use on the handle i lay with the grain running along the handle (strongest that way) but this time as it was a really nice piece i wanted something special.  And as such i ran the grain across the handle, which looks great.

Anyway till next time...oh and that Gladstone bag i am making is definitely coming along..but slooowly ;o)
